The firm of Chester & Vestal, P.A. was established in 1977 by attorneys Edwin (Ned) Chester and Barbara Vestal in Portland’s Munjoy Hill/Eastern Prom neighborhood. Ned and Barbara were joined by associate attorney Kristina Dougherty in 2018 and by non-attorney education advocate Amber Miller in 2019.
The firm provides legal services to individuals, families and small businesses in the areas of real estate, juvenile defense, school discipline and educational advocacy, guardian ad litem, wills, estates and probate, and some family matters. The practice is generally concentrated in Southern Maine, but juvenile defense work is handled on a statewide basis.
Chester & Vestal, P.A., a small firm with over 40 years of experience, prides itself on providing individualized legal services. Many of the firm’s clients are seeking legal advice for the first time, or are facing important decisions about matters which are new to them. The attorneys take time to explain legal concepts, procedures, and options so clients can make informed decisions.
In juvenile matters, the firm emphasizes a team approach, frequently involving the family, treatment providers, and the community in seeking creative solutions with potential long-term benefits for the child. Unlike criminal defense work, the emphasis with juvenile defendants is on redirection, rehabilitation, and positive youth development. A juvenile charge, while a very serious legal matter, also frequently presents an opportunity for the child, family and community to collaborate to produce a better outcome for that adolescent.
